The sun is shining again! After 2 weeks of torrential downpours it’s been nice not packing rain gear the last few days. With mornings around 70f it’s really been starting to feel like fall on the water this week. The bites been ok after all the rain, it was pretty good during the front but hasn’t exactly been wide open this week since. Look for things to normalize after we get some salinity back in the system.
Offshore the fish have had a nice break from any angling pressure so I expect the action will pretty good for anyone who makes it out between the fronts this week. Unfortunately for weekend anglers the weather is supposed to pick back up starting Friday with gusting Nor’easter conditions expected for Saturday and Sunday. Watch the weather and be safe out there if you go.
Inshore there’s plenty of action to be had for anyone looking to bend a rod. The Mullet run is tapering off but we’re still seeing some good schools around. With the wind going back North this weekend there should be another push. Watch for action near the inlets especially on the outgoing tides.
With all the rain even if you’re not looking for Mullet run action the inlets and close to them are likely going to be best bets for targeting inshore fish. The salinity is way down upriver and usually after large scale rainfall events like last week the fish will push out closer to the inlets, even to the nearshore wrecks.
In the creeks the Flounder, Trout, and Redfish have all been biting pretty good this week. We’ve mostly been Flounder fishing low tide, Trout fishing the mid to high incoming, and then chasing Reds around in the flood once the cycle peaks. I’ve been using Gulp swimming mullet for Flounder, paddle tails for Trout, and fly fishing for Redfish. If you prefer live bait the small finger Mullet are key right now. The fish are dialed in on them and you’ll get more quality bites compared to mud minnows or shrimp.
As always wishing y’all tight lines, fair winds, and following seas going into the weekend! If you’re looking to book a charter, submit a photo, or have a report to share reach out to me directly at chris@fishjax.org or visit www.fishjaxcharters.com.
