With Debby bringing the first tropical activity of the year it hasn’t been a great week for fishing on the First Coast. Luckily we dodged the worst of the storm locally and it looks like conditions should improve for anglers to make it back out on the water over the next few days. The forecast for the weekend looks pretty questionable for any hope of getting offshore but inshore looks ok with moderate winds and some scattered storms.
With much of the St. John’s drainage receiving significant rains the last few days we can expect to see impacts lasting over the next week or two here in Jacksonville. For the next few days boaters should use extra caution for any floating debris that’s been dislodged from the storms wind and high water. Be especially cautious running early mornings or at night when it will be harder to see obstructions in the water. You can check the Coast Guards updated notice to mariners for weekly updates on any channel markers damaged or other documented hazards from the storm along our local waterways.
Other than a few days off the water the biggest impact of Debby on local anglers will likely be the increase in freshwater flowing towards the ocean. With the St. John’s being the major outlet for the all rain we’ve received from Debbie a salinity drop upriver can push some of the inshore fish like Trout, Flounder, and Redfish towards the inlets. It’s too early to tell how the storm may effect the years shrimp run. Last week’s reports from Doctors Lake and South towards Green Cove had been of mostly bait size shrimp with a few larger ones mixed in.
Allen Andone with a nice pair of Redfish we doubled up on while dodging the wind and fishing inshore last week.
