It’s looking like a great weekend for local anglers with light winds, calm seas, and a big May moon. We’re in the peak of some of the best fishing on the year and it should be a good few days both inshore and offshore.
Offshore the forecast looks fantastic to make the run out deep to troll the Gulf Stream for Mahi and I’m sure some of the bigger boats will push to the otherside on this weather window. With Grouper open and the Vermilion and Triggerfish chewing its a good opportunity to make a grocery run bottom fishing, bounce around to find spots not covered in Red Snapper and you can put together a good box. Most of the better bottom fishing has been out deep from 130-180 feet but there’s plenty of quality fish shallower if you can get around the Reds. I fished mostly 130-155 last trip and we had a good variety of fish with our 2 Gag Grouper, a Red Grouper, Triggerfish, Vermilion, Mahi, Blackfin, and all the Jacks you could want. With the Mahi still around it’s a great idea to have a pitch rod ready at all times with either a small live bait hook ready or a swim bait.
Inshore the Redfishing has been pretty good, all the rain earlier in the week and last week we didn’t dirty the water up too much. There’s plenty of mullet around and the bigger fish seemed pretty locked in on Mullet as forage. Capt Joe Curtis ran a couple inshore trips this week and got on a good Mangrove Snapper bite using live shrimp on jigs. They had plenty of action between the snapper, Trout, Jacks, and Ladyfish.
As always wishing y’all tight lines, fair winds, and following seas going into the weekend! If you’re looking to book a charter, submit a photo, or have a report to share reach out to me directly at chris@fishjax.org or visit www.fishjaxcharters.com.
Tyler wanted in on the bottom fishing action and caught his first Gag Grouper on our last trip out of Mayport.
