Jacksonville Fishing Report 2.14.24

2/14 fishing report

The weathers been back and forth this week with highs in the 70 being replaced by another brisk blow of North wind and cooler air. The weekends shaping up to be wet and chilly with high rain chances Saturday and a stiff breeze Sunday. The best bet for the next few days is playing hooky on Friday and catching the pre frontal bite.

It’s been a bit slow on the rocks this week the Sheepshead bite has been consistent but not as good as it had been. Less than ideal tides during the start of the week are partially to blame but even poking around the river and some nearshore numbers we never found anything wide open.

The warm up did have the Redfish happy and crawling back in the skinny stuff. Slow way down with this water temperature and really hit the holes if it’s cooler out or early in the day. Like last week the best action has been later in the afternoons especially on sunny days.

The Trout fishing has been picking up as we get into spring and Capt. Matt Chipperfield is on a hot bite landing a handful of Trout over 20 inches the last few days. Capt. Chip Wingo has also been on the trout and reported good action along the ICW from Beach Blvd south through the valley. Slow presentations have been key to getting the bite, with the water still cool you’ve got to dial it back on the retrieve and really let that pause linger. It’s a great time of year for hard plastics like the MR72 and the L30 from Mirrolure, those are some tried and true trout ticklers. Look for fish staging in 5-15 feet of water, the roll downs along the main channels are a good place to start.

Offshore the Wahoo bite was off last weekend, with a good number of boats fishing I didn’t get any great reports, some had one, best I heard was two. The high speed fishing should pick back up and I expect we will see another great spring season as we move closer to the March full moon. Bottom fishing was much better than the troll this week with lots of Mutton’s, Vermilion, and Triggerfish to keep the rods bent. The hot action was out in 120-150 feet with not much current it was easy to hold bottom and stay on the fish.

As always wishing y’all tight lines, fair winds, and following seas going into the weekend! If you’re looking to book a charter, submit a photo, or have a report to share reach out to me directly at chris@fishjax.org or visit www.fishjaxcharters.com.

Capt. Matt and I did a little exploring on a recent day off and found some shallow water Redfish action in the creeks along the ICW.
