Jacksonville Fishing report 1/8/25

Writer's picture: Captain ChrisCaptain Chris

Sadly this will be the last Beaches Leader Fishing Report. For the last few years it’s been my pleasure to share stories and catches with all of you readers. Going forward I will still be writing a report and publishing it directly on my website www.fishjaxcharters.com. I hope some of you continue to read and send in your own stories and reports to share.

It’s been a cold start to the year and we’re looking at more chilly air for the next week if this forecast holds. With a full moon on Monday there’s lots of hope for a Wahoo window over the weekend but the weathers looking questionable for now. Last Sunday saw lots of boats declaring for the Don Combs and quite a few fish weighed.

We didn’t declare for the tournament but went after Wahoo anyway on Sundays charter and found a hot bite on the high speed. Our day started slow with lines in at dawn but no bites until close to 11am. The crew stuck with me and right about the time I’m sure someone was contemplating proposing a switch to bottom fishing the short cooks off and starts screaming. Seconds later the Tiagra 50 on other corner joins in the song of its people and we’ve got a double, as lines are being cleared the port long rips out and all of sudden we’ve gone from a dull morning to tripled up chaos.

Luckily the bite stayed hot for a few hours, there were some moments of panic but more of celebration as we got the guys into a rhythm of setting the spread, getting bit, cranking them in and putting fish on deck. After our 2nd late afternoon double up the crews arms couldn’t take anymore reeling so we packed it up and headed in a little early. Ended up 7/11 making for an awesome day of Wahoo fishing and a boat load of sushi logs for lots of lucky friends and family.

Inshore the Sheepshead, Trout, and Redfish have all been chewing pretty good. This cool down has the water in the mid 50s so think SLOW. Slower presentation, more time on spots, slow everything down for more action this time of year. The Trout bite in the ICW and the river around Mayport was wide open the few days I fished inshore since the new year.

I’ve been focusing on Redfish on the lower tide stages then looking for Trout on the higher tides as the water gets into the grass. The fish have mostly been in 5-8ft of water and keyed in on points, eddies, and drop offs. We’ve been throwing a mix of the usual go to hard baits, 52MR, 27MR, Bomber, and Yozuri plus soft plastic paddletails. The bites been good on both. If you prefer live bait a float rig with shrimp would be absolutely killer in those scenarios just play with the depth below the float until you find where they are sitting in the column.

As always wishing y’all tight lines, fair winds, and following seas going into the weekend! If you’re looking to book a charter, submit a photo, or have a report to share reach out to me directly at chris@fishjax.org or visit www.fishjaxcharters.com.
