5/8/24 Fishing Report

Writer's picture: Captain ChrisCaptain Chris

It’s May in Mayport and we’re looking at some of the hottest fishing of the year. From the backwater creeks to the ledge and the bluewater beyond there’s something biting. The weathers looking pretty nice for the coming weekend with Mother’s Day shaping up to be a great day to get offshore.

Inshore the Redfish are creeping and crawling in the creeks, crushing finger mullet and shrimp on along the oyster bars and grass lines. The Flounder are moving into the marshes in waves and we’ve seen a solid push of fish this week. The roll downs have been hot for trout especially the 4-7ft transition along the main banks. If you can find clean moving water, an eddy, and hard bottom you’ll be in business for Trout right now.

Offshore it’s wide open. The Mahi are here. Grouper are chewing. The stringer fish bite of Vermilion and Triggerfish has been hot. We’ve been mostly bottom fishing between 130 and 180 with good luck on the Snapper and a few Grouper. The Mahi bites been great over the last week, with most reports from 500 feet out to 2000. There’s been a good number of Marlin around so having a big bait in the mix isn’t a bad call for anyone trolling over the next few days. A peanut rigged up for a pitch bait could make magic happen if that big blue comes up in the spread.

Closer in the Cobia are still around the beach and the party grounds. The Kingfish have moved into the wrecks as well and we got lucky this week on some nice sized Blackfin within 15 miles of the rocks. With all the east flow we’ve had sargassum and ballyhoo on the rip out of Mayport and I’m sure there are some Sailfish in close right now, Capt. Chip Wingo saw on while riding down the rip.  The water on the beach is warming up quick and it’s starting to feel like summer out there. We’re seeing some Tarpon moving through and there’s been a few hooked on the rocks already this year but we’re not into the thick of them yet. Any day now the Silver Kings will start busting up bait pods along the First Coast.

Bob Parsons kicking off Grouper Season right with this 45 pound Black Belly Gag Grouper caught on the Southern Cross last weekend out of Mayport.

As always wishing y’all tight lines, fair winds, and following seas going into the weekend! If you’re looking to book a charter, submit a photo, or have a report to share reach out to me directly at chris@fishjax.org or visit www.fishjaxcharters.com.
